A large amount of Yuan and US dollars were
found in the safe of a rural credit cooperative when Chinese soldiers
excavated a vault from rubble in quake-battered Beichuan County in
southwest China's Sichuan province on Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
A vault with over 6.7 million Yuan (almost one million US dollars)
in cash was pulled out of the debris of a rural credit cooperative in
quake-battered Beichuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province
Wednesday afternoon.
The vault was salvaged thanks to the
efforts of soldiers from the 2nd artillery forces of the Chinese army,
the Guangzhou-based newspaper 'Nanfang City News' reported.
The
rural credit cooperative accepted not only its own cash, but also lots
of money from the local agricultural development bank, as well as some
other banks.
The PLA's efforts to protect property also
received sincere thanks from Chairman of China Banking Regulatory
Commission Liu Mingkang, who arrived in earthquake-hit Mianyang city
Thursday.
Chen Lixiong, deputy director of the Sichuan Rural
Credit Cooperatives Union's Mianyang office said the army is playing a
vital role in recovery efforts.
"It is not an easy task for soldiers to rescue both lives and property from the catastrophe," he said.
The
eight-story office building of the rural credit cooperatives collapsed
killing a total of 36 people and burying the vault during the
8-magnitude earthquake which jolted Sichuan Province on May 12.
Soldiers
arrived at the site of the collapsed building six days ago, soon after
receiving Chen's request to pull the vault from the rubble.
The
soldiers faced a tough challenge in excavating the vault, as the
financial institution's office building had a strong structure, built
with reinforced concrete.
A number of US dollars were also found in the vault's safe.
